Happy Father’s Day: My Favorite Movie and Television Dads

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads reading this!

Last year on Mother’s Day, I did a post listing my favorite movie and television moms, so this year I thought I would do the same with dads.

As with the moms on my list, I tried to chose dads that had some of the same special qualities as my late father who was the best dad anyone could ever ask for!

Instead of pictures this time, I’ve included links to some relevant YouTube videos for a few of these wonderful dads!

My Favorite Movie and Television Dads (in no particular order):

  • Judge James K. Hardy from the Andy Hardy series of movies – played by Lewis Stone – Judge Hardy was a bit like my own dad in that he was stern when he needed to be but was really a softy at heart. One of my fondest memories I have of my dad is when he used to ground us and then 20 minutes later un-ground us and apologize for yelling at us. :-)
  • George Bailey from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) – played by Jimmy Stewart – Of course I had to include my favorite actor on this list. :-) Even through his fear and despair, you can see the love George Bailey has for his children in this touching scene from the movie.
  • Stanley Banks and George Banks from the movie Father of the Bride (1950 & 1991) – played by Spencer Tracy & Steve  Martin – I love both versions and both dads for different reasons. It took them a while to come around to accepting that their daughter had grown up and was getting married, but ultimately they just wanted what was best for their “little” girl.
  • Charles Ingalls from the tv show Little House on the Prairie – played by Michael Landon – Probably my favorite dad on this list, you can see the love Laura has for “Pa” in this sweet scene that I absolutely love.
  • Howard Cunningham from the tv show Happy Days – played by Tom Bosley – Probably my second favorite dad, I was really sad when Tom Bosley died a few years ago. One of my favorite scenes from the show was when Mr. C consoled his son Richie after he missed a key free throw in an important basketball game.
  • Mike Brady from the tv show The Brady Bunch – played by Robert Reed – One of my favorite episodes was when Marcia nominated him for a Father of the Year award. Probably the one and only episode where I actually cried. Watch this clip and tell me you wouldn’t cry, too. :-)
  • Steve Douglas from the tv show My Three Sons – played by Fred MacMurray – His role as a widower trying to raise three boys is how I first came to know Fred MacMurray, long before I watched him in an old movie for the first time.
  • Tom Corbett from the tv show The Courtship of Eddie’s Father – played by Bill Bixby – This show was based on the movie of the same name from 1963, which starred Glenn Ford in the role of the dad. Another show about a widower raising a son, I loved the sweet relationship between Tom and his cute son, played by Brandon Cruz.
  • (Uncle) Bill Davis from the tv show Family Affair – played by Brian Keith – As his name implies, he wasn’t actually the dad of the children in the show. He became their guardian after his brother died in an accident, but he loved them the same as a real father would. How could you not when Buffy and Jody were so cute. :-)
  • Cliff Huxtable from the tv show The Cosby Show – played by Bill Cosby – A loving, caring father with a great sense of humor, what a great combination! One of my all time favorite scenes that still makes me laugh to this day is when Dr. Huxtable teaches Theo about the value of money. The very end of this scene is priceless!

There are probably many more movie and television fathers I could add to this list, but those are just a few of my absolute favorites.

Hi, Ginny — I enjoyed your list! Some of my favorite fathers include Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show and Clarence Day from Life with Father. And you’re right about that clip from The Brady Bunch — I started tearing up about 10 seconds in, LOL!

Thanks for reminding me about Cliff Huxtable, Karen! I knew I would forget some good ones. I edited my post to include him because I just had to share a scene that I think is so funny. :-)

  2. Thanks for this post. It really got me to thinking about your question. I think George Bailey was an excellent choice, but I always think of his father as they great dad of the movie. It’s a very touching scene while they are sitting at the dinner table. To go contemporary on you, I loved Denzel Washington in John Q, and oddly enough I learned a lot last year from Brad Pitt in The Tree Of Life. But come on everybody lets talk about the love that it took for Anikan (Darth Vader) to break against years on the dark side in order to save his son! What do you say everybody?

    • Ginny says:

That is such a great point about George’s dad, Paul! I never really thought of it that way. I just re-watched that scene and it is very touching. Makes me miss and appreciate my own dad.

Okay, this is where I must make a bold confession; I have never seen a Star Wars movie! So I’ll leave it to others to comment on Darth Vader. :-)

I agree with you on the whole bunch of movie and TV Dads you mentioned. Yeah, Charles Ingall’s was a real caring Dad on Little House, a great series.

There are so many movie and TV dads to choose from. It is so hard for me to choose. I really did like EG Robinson as a simple farmer and Dad to Margaret O’Brien in a very good film called Our Vines Have Tender Grapes. Spencer Tracy always seemed to portray a great father figure. He showed great wisdom in Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner with Kate Hepburn. Tracy was a real caring father in Father of the Bride and Father’s Little Dividend with Elizabeth Taylor. I thought Tracy and Joan Bennett had great chemistry in these two films.

There were also alotta real funny dads that were on TV that I enjoyed over the years. Jerry Stiller was just awesome in many episodes on Seinfeld as George’s Dad, Frank Costanza. I just loved him in the episode where they celebrate the holiday Festivus. He is also priceless in the series, The King Of Queens as Arthur Spooner. His constant scheming and mischief always seem to make me laugh. The late Peter Boyle who played Frank Barone On Everybody Loves Raymond is also a favorite of mine. Being Italian I could relate to a lot of the humor. All In The Family was also always a favorite show of mine. Carroll O’Connor as Archie had a lot faults but he loved his little girl Gloria very much.

Growing up as a kid in the 70s I always enjoyed the show Lost In Space. Guy Williams who portrayed Professor John Robinson was always a cool Dad to me. He had a really good heart and always put the safety and well being of his family above everything. Qualities essential to any great Dad. The lessons we learned as kids back then through television and films from these Dads just had to help all of us Generation X and Baby Boomer kids.

I am sorry but we just don’t see many of the kind of TV or movie Dads you or I mentioned anymore. I don’t know if that is just a sign of the times but it is kind of sad to me.

Happy belated Father’s Day to all the Dads who have given meaning to all our lives in big and small ways. Real or fictional most have impacted each one of our lives in a positive way and I am grateful for that. Ginny, thanks for remembering all the film and television Dads.

It was really hard to choose! I’ve thought of several more since yesterday that I could have added. Thanks for sharing your choices! You mentioned some really good ones. You also reminded me that I really have to watch Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner soon. I still have not seen it.

Yeah, I wish there were more shows and more parents like the ones we watched growing up!

I always thought Andy Griffith portraying Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show was a great television Dad. The lessons his TV son Opie (Ron Howard) learned from him were priceless. That show was one of my favorites of all time. The costars and character actors in the show were endless. Many of them appeared in classic movies previously.

Barney (Don Knotts) and Floyd The Barber(Howard McNear) always made me laugh. The two cousins Gomer (Jim Nabors) and Goober (George Lindsey) were also cool. Goober did his Cary Grant imitation “Judy, Judy, Judy” very often. Sadly we just lost George Lindsey a few weeks ago.

Gomer had a unique southern drawl. I remember one episode where Barney, Andy, Opie and Gomer went on a camping trip. The funny thing about the episode was Goober’s reference to a classic film actor. He didn’t want to go on the trip because he wanted to see a Preston Foster film. Just to hear him pronounce Foster in that southern voice cracked me up. Andy Griffith was a one of a kind show. The great character actor Sheldon Leonard produced many episodes.
