I listen to my favorite music on it of course, but by far the thing I use it for the most is to listen to podcasts, including some great movie podcasts.
So, what is a podcast?
If you are not familiar with what a podcast is, it is a type of audio or video file, usually part of a series on a specific topic or subject area, that can be streamed online or downloaded and listened to on a mobile device or portable media player such as an iPod.
You can probably find a podcast on just about any subject imaginable, and I personally listen to podcasts on subjects ranging from health & nutrition, to sports, to business, to movies/entertainment.
I’m sure there are many different podcasts out there for movie lovers of all kinds, but today I am going to share some movie podcasts that have something to offer the classic movie fan.
Here are 7 of my favorite movie podcasts that I think you will enjoy:
Turner Classic Movies host Scott McGee interviews various guests about some of their favorite movies from the upcoming TCM schedule. We also get to hear interesting stories of how his guests came to be fans of classic movies.
Episodes include complete unedited audio versions of interviews from the Turner Classic Movies series called Private Screenings hosted by Robert Osborne. He conducted fascinating interviews with various Hollywood legends such as Robert Mitchum, Mickey Rooney, Jane Powell, and in one of my favorite interviews, June Allyson.
Hosts Katie and Hilary cover a variety of fun subjects on their podcast that they devote to the memory of classic films, including interesting interviews conducted in their very down-to-earth, friendly style. A favorite of mine is an interview they recently did about “second bananas” which you can read more about here.
4. The Cinementals
This is a relatively new podcast that has quickly become one of my favorites! Hosts Will McKinley and Jill Blake are funny and informative, and their passion for and knowledge of classic film is very evident in every discussion. I’ve really enjoyed their latest episodes where along with special guests they reveal their must see picks from the upcoming TCM schedule.
Update: Since I wrote this post, this podcast has been discontinued and unfortunately is no longer available.
This is a great podcast for anyone who loves film noir. Hosts Shannon Clute and Richard Edwards discuss a different film noir title in each episode and explore things like plot and character development, direction, cinematography, music scores, etc. It’s fun to watch one of the movies and then listen to the corresponding podcast afterward to compare notes.
6. Oscar, Oscar
This is actually a live weekly online radio show, but the recorded versions can also be downloaded or streamed online. Even though it covers movies from all time periods, classic movies are well represented.
My favorite shows are from the “A Year at the Oscars” series. In each show covering a separate year of the Academy Awards, host Jason O’Brien explores what was going on in the world at the time, plays clips of popular music of the day, and analyzes the best picture winner to see if it has stood the test of time as the best movie of that year.
Hosted by George Feltenstein, this podcast provides previews of new releases in the Warner Archive collection, broadcasts of vintage radio shows, and interviews with interesting guests. I just recently listened to a great interview George did with Mickey Rooney that has inspired me to watch more of the movies from the Andy Hardy Series.
I would encourage you to visit the sites of each of these wonderful podcasts using the links provided to find out more about them and to give them a listen. They offer so much great information that any classic movie fan would enjoy!
